Celtic still have edge in Premiership title race despite Rangers’ ‘brilliant’ Jermain Defoe deal, Sir Kenny Dalglish says
Celtic are still going to win the Scottish Premiership despite Rangers completing the ‘brilliant’ signing of Jermain Defoe, Sir Kenny Dalglish believes.Writing in the Sunday Post, Hoops hero Dalglish praised Steven Gerrard for capturing the veteran forward, who has been backed to rediscover his scoring touch north of the border.“To have captured Jermain Defoe on loan from Bournemouth is brilliant business,” Dalglish writes.“Jermain may well be 36 and have had a number of clubs during his career, but Im certain there will still be a hunger and burning desire within him to bring silverware to Ibrox.“He will score plenty of goals.”Defoe’s arrival, however, does not change the fact Celtic are favourites to win another Premiership title, which would make it eight in a row for the Parkhead club.Despite losing to Rangers in their final match of 2018, Brendan Rodgers’ side remain top of the league, ahead of their Old Firm rivals on goal difference. Celtic also have a game in hand, which if won would move them three points clear in first.Rodgers’ side also have experience of winning the Premiership title, and while Rangers have won Scotland’s highest league honour more times than any other club, they have not claimed the top flight title since the 2010/11 season. And, on top of this experience, Dalglish believes Celtic will be fired up to go on and win the league as everyone has been doubting their ability to do just that. “They have been the champions for the past seven years and they have a squad of players and a manager used to winning things,” Daglish wrote of Celtic.“Losing to Rangers last Saturday was a setback, but they remain top of the league, level on points, with a game in hand.“Sure, you could say without fear of contradiction that they should have five or six more points on the board from their league games.“Their away form hasnt been great and dropping points at St Mirren, Livingston, Motherwell, Hibs, Hearts and Kilmarnock was fairly unexpected.“I would imagine they couldnt drop the same amount of points on the road in the second half of the campaign and I still expect Celtic to make it eight titles on the trot.“They need to win more games away from Parkhead. It’s been harder than usual for Rodgers this season with Celtic in a real fight for the title1

“They have been used to more of a points cushion in the past two years but that could make them even more dangerous.“Some people have been questioning them, and that usually sparks a positive response from everyone.“Thats why I still give the edge in the title race to Celtic.“I expect it to be mightily close but they are the favourites with the bookmakers and I agree with that.”
