Raheem Sterling: Tony Cascarino hits out at abusive fans after racism claims – ‘What makes you that angry?’
Tony Cascarino admits he is confused by football fans who express over the top anger at rival players during matches.Cascarino, the ex-Republic of Ireland international, was speaking on talkSPORT’s Weekend Sports Breakfast show, the day after Raheem Sterling was allegedly racially abused by a Chelsea supporter during Manchester City’s defeat at Stamford Bridge.Video footage of the alleged racial abuse was shared on social media1

Chelsea, one of Cascarino’s former clubs, and the Metropolitan Police are investigating the claims, which Sterling reacted to on social media, expressing his belief newspapers ‘help fuel racism’ due to their treatment of young black players in relation to their white counterparts. The supporter alleged to have abused Sterling can been seen in a video widely shared on social media, in which he rushes to the advertising hoardings to shout at the England international as he collected the ball. The aforementioned supporter is not the first fan to rush towards a player to hurl abuse, and he certainly will not be the last, but that doesn’t make said actions understandable to Cascarino.Speaking on the Weekend Sports Breakfast, Cascarino said: I find it amazing when you see throw-ins or corners where fans just leave their seat and run up and go mental, with all extremities, at players. You see it yesterday – they are just leaping out their seats to voice their anger.I just dont get it! What makes you that angry and that upset, especially when youre winning the game as well!

Our computer has calculated that Newcastle will pick up seven points from their seven fixtures over the Christmas period, against West Ham (h), Everton (a), Wolves (h), Huddersfield (a), Fulham (h), Liverpool (a) and Watford (a). That will leave the Magpies on 19 points from 20 games (the same as Brighton but with a superior goal difference).
