Scouts had been keeping an eye on the then 20-year-old before Moyes went to Anfield to see him in action, where a 1-0 win saw Liverpool scrape into the Champions League group stage.It was part of a long term strategy at Goodison Park as Everton pondered life without long serving hero Tim Cahill, with Moyes believing the Belgium international was the ideal signing.
